History of the Garth Cates Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Garth Cates Memorial Scholarship Fund was created by the members of the Idaho Chapter-National Electrical Contractors Association in honor of the Chapter's long-time Executive Manager. Garth, who had managed the Chapter since its formation in 1979, passed away due to cancer on September 17, 1997.

In his nearly 20 years as Executive Manager, Garth established himself as a leader and mentor within the electrical industry. A recipient of many of the Association's regional and national awards, Garth was highly respected by his peers for his integrity, character, leadership skills, and devotion to the industry. He was viewed by many other NECA managers nationwide as defining the standards of what was expected in their roles.

Garth placed a very high value on the benefits of higher education and "continuous learning" at all levels. Prior to his career with NECA, Garth served the College of Idaho in admissions, then as Director of Admissions for Drury College in Springfield, MO. Always very involved in community affairs, Garth was a member of Rotary, and served in various roles for a multitude of charitable organizations across the state.

For these reasons, the Garth Cates memorial Scholarship Fund is an appropriate tribute to an extraordinary person. Garth touched many people during his lifetime; through this program, he will continue to enrich people's lives in a way that was so meaningful and important to him and our communities.
